Through its IMI Corporate & Investment Banking Division, Intesa Sanpaolo participated in a €1.5 billion loan to Terna for the construction of the Adriatic Link, the submarine power line connecting Marche and Abruzzo.

It is a strategic project for Italy’s electricity system, included in the National Integrated Plan for Energy and Climate. It is aimed at strengthening the exchange of energy in the central Italy, while enhancing grid security, flexibility, and the integration of renewable sources.

The project includes a 251-kilometre high-voltage direct current (HVDC) line, of which 210 kilometres will run underwater at depths of up to 100 metres, with an active transmission capacity of 1,000 MW.

The financial structure of the transaction is divided into three tranches, all backed by SACE for over €1 billion with the Archimede Guarantee:

  • a €750 million loan from the EIB, with a duration of 22 years
  • a €500 million credit facility provided by Intesa Sanpaolo, with a 7-year term
  • a further loan of €250 million, from Intesa Sanpaolo, with funding made available by the EIB and with a duration of 7-year, to support the project.

This transaction strengthens Intesa Sanpaolo's role in supporting the energy transition and the development of strategic infrastructure for Italy.
