Green Purchases
Intesa Sanpaolo's attention to the environment, enshrined in its Environmental and Energy Policy, is also reflected in the purchase of "green products", with low energy consumption and lower environmental impact, as further detailed in the pages relating to direct environmental impacts.
It is the Bank's responsibility to commit itself to sustainable development by rejecting waste, adopting solutions that ensure a progressive improvement in efficiency, constant attention to the environmental consequences of our choices and favouring supply systems that do not generate negative impacts on the environment. The commitment to reducing its ecological footprint is testified, among other things, by the implementation in Italy of an Environmental and Energy Management System certified by an international third party compliant with ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 standards for the management of processes and environmental and energy performance relating to all Intesa Sanpaolo branches and buildings.
For a company like Intesa Sanpaolo, paper is a resource on which particular attention is paid, also expressed through a specific dedicated chapter in the Green Banking Procurement Rules.
To promote these practices with regard to paper, the Intesa Sanpaolo Group undertakes to use paper and paper-based products with a higher content of recycled fibres, mostly post-consumer.
Compared with 2023, the use of paper fell by 9.73%, with an increase in the purchase of recycled paper by foreign subsidiaries, confirming the Group's increasing attention to environmental impacts. The parameter per employee (37.3 kg in 2024 vs 41.5 kg in 2023) also confirms the greater awareness of the Group's employees in the use of paper. Thanks to the various dematerialization actions completed in the last five years, in 2024 there was a paper saving of about 1,945 tons, corresponding to 4,283 t of CO2 avoided and a theoretical economic saving of about 4.2 million euro.
Stationery can have a significant environmental impact. In order to support "circular" production models, the Intesa Sanpaolo Group undertakes to purchase, where possible and available, stationery products that, in addition to compliance with national regulations, are sustainable, considering the protection and preservation of the environment as a priority when purchasing office supplies.
The products for which the Intesa Sanpaolo Group is committed to responsible policies and choices are:
- Paper economic material (notepads, notepads, folders and binders)
- Economic material with the presence of wood
- Ballpoint pens and highlighters
- Stamps
In 2024, the percentage of purchases of eco-friendly stationery increased compared to 2023, reaching around 75.8 tonnes of sustainable office supplies, including 71.2 tonnes of paper materials (notebooks, post-its, folders, etc.), 3.6 tonnes of ballpoint pens and the remainder consisting of highlighters, stamps made of recycled material and office supplies containing sustainable wood.
The Intesa Sanpaolo Group undertakes to purchase, where possible and available, "regenerated" cartridges which, in addition to compliance with national regulations, are sustainable and have quality and print yield equivalent to the original cartridges and toner inks and powders free of certain hazardous substances. In 2024, toner consumption decreased by 18.2% in line with the reduction in paper consumption, and there was also an increase in the purchase of recycled toner (57.9%) compared to traditional toners.
The Intesa Sanpaolo Group:
- for years has been starting a process aimed at reducing its direct emissions thanks to the gradual purchase of electricity from renewable sources in all countries where there is a free market and for all those properties where there are the conditions to have an independent user
- for years now, it has been implementing energy efficiency actions aimed at containing energy consumption in line with the provisions of the Environmental and Energy Policy:
- increasing the insulation levels of their buildings;
- verifying the efficiency of the air conditioning systems and, if necessary, intervening to improve it;
- using efficient lighting systems.
The Intesa Sanpaolo Group has undertaken, where possible, to produce electricity (totally self-consumed) through photovoltaic systems and to the purchase of electricity from renewable sources. In 2024, the Intesa Sanpaolo Group in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia self-produced 1.353 MWh of energy, with a saving of about 404.000 euro on the purchase of electricity and avoiding 624 tons of CO2 emissions.
